Chief AI Officers are Becoming More Common in the C-Suite

New research confirms that chief AI officers are becoming more common in the C-suite. AI has really moved out of the innovation lab and into the boardroom, and leadership charts are changing to match. Over the past six years, a growing number of large U.S. corporations have created a brand-new executive seat: the Chief AI Officer.
Below, we unpack what the data shows, what a Chief AI Officer actually does, and why companies are hiring Chief AI Officers to provide dedicated AI leadership at the top.
Chief AI Officers Are Becoming More Common in the C-Suite
Crist Kolder's 2026 Mid-Year Volatility Report reviewed 665 Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies. Of those, 71 companies, or 10.7%, currently employ a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer or an executive with a clearly equivalent AI title. All of these roles were appointed between 2020 and 2026.
The report's framing is telling. Its core analysis defines the C-suite narrowly as the CEO, CFO, and COO. Yet it added a separate addendum calling chief AI officers "the new C-suite category," a sign that C-suite AI roles have grown too visible for leadership researchers to ignore. Among emerging C-suite roles, few have spread this quickly.
Companies With Chief AI Officers by Industry
Adoption varies widely by sector:
Healthcare: 18.5%
Financial: 15.3%
Technology: 12.6%
Industrial: 8.5%
Consumer: 7.9%
Energy: 7.6%
Services: 6.6%
Healthcare leads even though it makes up only about 9.7% of the companies studied, the smallest industry group in the sample. Services, the largest group at 18.1%, has the lowest adoption rate. In other words, company count doesn't drive the trend. Data intensity does.

How the Study Counted CAIOs
The report set a strict bar. A company was counted only if its CAIO role was enterprise-wide, unambiguous, and currently active, with data running through July 31, 2026. Narrow, team-level AI leads and vaguely titled positions were left out, so the 10.7% figure likely understates how much AI-focused executive talent already sits inside these companies.
What Does a Chief AI Officer Do?
According to Josh Crist, co-managing partner at Crist Kolder, the role of Chief AI Officer in the C-suite centers on overseeing how AI is deployed across the business and built into different workstreams. "This usually starts with practical technologies like generative AI, machine learning, and predictive models and broadens from there," he said.
Core Chief AI Officer Responsibilities and Duties
While each Chief AI Officer job is shaped by its industry, typical Chief AI Officer duties include:
Setting enterprise AI strategy: Deciding where AI creates the most value and how it fits into the wider business plan.
Scaling what works: Turning successful pilots into company-wide tools instead of scattered experiments.
Governance and risk: Building the internal checks and balances that keep AI safe, explainable, and accountable.
Cross-functional coordination: Working alongside CIOs, CTOs, data leaders, and business unit heads so AI investments don't get duplicated or siloed.
In short, the CAIO defines how companies manage enterprise AI, from the first use case to long-term oversight.
Companies Hiring Chief AI Officers
The organizations behind recent appointments show how flexible the Chief AI Officer position can be.
FactSet: The financial data firm named Kate Stepp as Chief AI Officer, effective March 2026. Previously its CTO, she now leads AI services for clients and drives AI development across FactSet's products.
Eli Lilly: Lilly appointed Thomas J. Fuchs as its first Chief AI Officer in October 2024. His remit spans drug discovery, clinical trials, manufacturing, commercial operations, and internal functions, and he reports to Lilly's Chief Information and Digital Officer, a sign of how closely AI and digital leadership now work together.
McDonald's: The fast-food giant hired Das Dasgupta, formerly of Starbucks, as Global Chief Data Analytics and AI Officer in 2025, with a focus on early wins in restaurants and the app and a scalable AI foundation.
Boeing: Chief AI Officer Vishwa Uddanwadiker leads applied AI engineering and product modernization, with strict governance built around safety, explainability, privacy, and human oversight.
GE HealthCare: The company named Parminder Bhatia its first Chief AI Officer in 2023. According to Business Insider, he framed the job as speeding up AI adoption while staying clear-eyed about what the technology can and can't do. In September 2026, GE HealthCare (formerly of Medtronic) named Rodolphe Katra, as its new global Chief AI Officer.
Why Chief AI Officers Are Becoming More Common
Agentic AI Demands Stronger AI Governance in the C-Suite
Crist argues that putting AI to practical use requires clear leadership and checks and balances that run through management. That need grows sharper as agentic AI, which completes tasks with little human input, gains traction. When software can act on its own, someone at the executive level must own the guardrails, which is why AI in the C-suite is quickly becoming a governance issue as much as a technology one.
AI Spending Has Exploded
Investment is another driver. Gartner projects worldwide AI spending will climb 47% this year to $2.6 trillion, more than the GDP of Canada or Australia. Budgets that size call for corporate AI leadership with real accountability.
Data-Heavy Industries Moved First
Healthcare and technology were early adopters of practical AI across business functions, Crist noted. Because both sectors lean heavily on data and analytics, it makes sense that they lead in hiring AI-focused executives.
Chief AI Officer vs. Chief Data Officer and CIO
Like other new C-suite roles before it, the CAIO title echoes an earlier shift in technology leadership. The CIO role emerged in 1981, when a Bank of Boston executive argued that IT should be treated as a strategic, enterprise-wide asset rather than a set of back-office projects. The Chief AI Officer applies that same thinking to AI.
How does the Chief AI Officer vs. Chief Data Officer split work in practice? Data leaders typically own data quality, infrastructure, and analytics, while the CAIO turns that data into AI products and governs how they are used. Some companies merge the jobs, as McDonald's did. Others pair them: at Boeing, the Chief AI Officer works alongside a separate Chief AI and Data Officer.
Crist added that the role is new and distinct enough that it won't erode the influence of other executives. "Will, over time, this function leak into additional functions? Of course," he said. "But we are not seeing any dilution in the influence of C-suite peers to the AI Officer."
Who Should Lead AI Strategy Amid C-Suite Turnover?
The same study shows why stable technology leadership matters. CFO turnover is on track for its highest rate since the pandemic, with a projected 18.3% in 2026 against a 16% historical average. External hiring is also rising: 27.3% of new CEOs and 37.5% of new CFOs so far this year came from outside, and every new CEO in the technology industry was an outside hire.
With top seats changing hands this often, AI strategy can stall if it lives with a single executive. A dedicated Chief AI Officer gives enterprise AI a consistent owner who can carry priorities across leadership transitions and help new CEOs and CFOs get up to speed quickly.
The Future of the Chief AI Officer Role
Crist Kolder doesn't have earlier data to measure past growth, but Crist calls the role "very new" and expects nearly 20% of companies to have one in some form by 2027. He also expects manufacturing to close the gap with healthcare and technology over time; more than 8% of industrial companies already have one. As AI leadership roles in the C-suite mature, expect more C-suite roles for AI to take shape, whether as standalone CAIOs or blended data, analytics, and AI titles.
For finance and executive teams, the takeaway is simple: AI is no longer just an IT project. It is a leadership responsibility, and the rise of the Chief AI Officer is how many of America's largest companies are choosing to own it.
